Ten years after launching his Terres Promises estate (2003), Jean-Christophe Comor’s name is already making waves in the small world of ‘natural’ wines. Having switched from a career in politics at the age of 38, and with absolutely no experience in winemaking, he set himself a daring – even mad – challenge: to produce his own wine starting from virtually nothing. A mad gamble, certainly, but a calculated one, for Jean-Christophe has a clear and uncompromising vision of what he wants to produce: a pure product of nature without any oenological artifice, something authentic and unique… a gamble that has paid off!
Located in the village of Roquebrussane in the Coteaux Varois region, this ‘unconventional’ winemaker now produces distinctive wines with evocative names such as Apesanteur, Apostrophe, Au hazard et souvent, A bouche que veux-tu, Alibi, Antidote, Amourvèdre, Abracadabrantesque …
The high altitude (400 m) allows the grapes to be harvested whilst retaining maximum freshness. The vines are grown on clay-limestone soil without the use of chemical inputs, using traditional organic methods, out of respect for the land and for wine lovers. Hand-harvested.
In the cellar, the winemaking process is traditional, with no added yeasts or acidifiers, and only very light sulphiting, so that the wines are matured as naturally as possible and reflect as closely as possible the grapes from which they are made, as well as the winemaker who cultivated them.
Jean-Christophe Comor, a man who holds the soil and the stones in such high regard, detests the word and the concept of terroir. And why not?! … We must admit that our understanding of this value, which is so dear to our hearts, is called into question every day. And if it does exist as we believe it does, our only certainty is that man (the winegrower) is at its very heart.
