Château Gombaude-Guillot is situated at the heart of the prestigious Pomerol plateau, surrounded by the appellation’s finest vineyards. Yet this château remains an unconventional estate that is breaking new ground in Pomerol. It adopted organic farming in 1998 and biodynamic farming in 2006, with a view to greater respect for the soil, the terroirs and living organisms. Environmental protection, the pursuit of biodiversity, a rejection of standardised winemaking practices, reduced inputs… And yes, natural wine has arrived in Bordeaux too: welcome to the world of Pomerol V2.0!
Château Gombaude-Guillot is a family estate purchased by the great-grandmother of Claire Laval-Techer (the current owner) at the end of the 19th century. In 1983, Claire Laval (a trained agronomist) took over the château from her father. She very quickly demonstrated her commitment to producing wines that respect the soil and its biodiversity. Grape ripeness, soil management, no chemical or synthetic products used, indigenous yeasts… The vineyard has been organically farmed since 1998 and biodynamically farmed since 2006. This makes it one of the few estates in the Pomerol appellation to adopt this approach. The estate produces fine, elegant, complex wines with character, ideal for ageing.
Since 2010, the château has been producing a sulphur-free cuvée, the famous “Pom’n’Roll”, vinified by Olivier Techer Jr. This cuvée takes the approach pioneered by his parents a step further, notably by drastically reducing the amount of sulphur added to the wines (since 2014, around 25 mg at bottling only).
