Mamaruta

Mamaruta Marc Castan

Mamaruta is all about century-old vines cultivated using agroecological methods, including ploughing, natural compost, grazing cattle and winemaking without chemical inputs. Marc Castan has left nothing to chance in his quest to produce wines in Fitou that are full of character, authentic, natural and vibrant!

The Mamaruta Estate

The Mamaruta vineyard covers 14 hectares. It is situated on the Aude coast between the towns of La Palme, Roquefort-des-Corbières and Leucate. It is a rich terroir that varies from rounded pebbles by the lake to limestone cliffs on the Mediterranean coast. Yields are relatively low, averaging between 16 hl/ha and 20 hl/ha. 70% of the vines are trained using the Gobelet method. The remainder are trained on wires, using the simple Guyot or Cordon de Royat methods. The grape varieties include Carignan Noir and Blanc, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache Noir and Gris, Macabeu and Muscat Petits Grains.

The Winemaker Marc Castan

Marc Castan. Born in Narbonne, he spent his entire childhood in the Corbières Maritimes, torn between a love of the sea and the land. After completing his A-levels, he decided to train in viticulture and take over his grandfather’s vineyard. A few years working in a cooperative and a moment of realisation later, he was off on the most wonderful of adventures! And so, in 2009, he produced his first vintages.

Vineyard work

Marc Castan is committed to working ‘cleanly’ and producing wines that are as natural as possible. He works the soil gently to revitalise it and encourage biodiversity. To this end, he is gradually replacing the tractor with horses and weeds by hand… when the season no longer allows him to let the cows graze. He also plants hedgerows of trees along the edges of the vineyard. He maintains and cleans the plots by hand. Marc Castan uses only sulphur, green clay and plant decoctions for his treatments. The grapes are harvested by hand and only in the morning so as not to expose the crop to the heat. Always with the aim of bringing healthy, high-quality grapes into the cellar, he uses only small crates.
