Mas du Chêne: Organic Farming the Old-Fashioned Way

Mas du Chêne

Le Mas du Chêne is a vineyard situated in the southern part of the Costières de Nîmes region, on the edge of the Camargue. Following the death of her mother in 1999, Emmanuelle Delon decided to leave everything behind to move to the farmhouse with her son and carry on the family tradition.

Her husband, Luc Vignal, after spending a few years as a wine merchant, decided to switch sides and joined her in 2008. From this partnership emerged, in addition to their two daughters, more than a dozen wines, most of which are single-varietal and organic.

The Mas du Chêne vineyard

Le Mas du Chêne comprises 64 hectares of contiguous land surrounding the estate. It is situated to the south of the Costières de Nîmes appellation area. The vineyard covers 50 hectares. The remaining 14 hectares consist of woodland, olive groves and hedgerows. These contribute to the balance of the landscape and biodiversity, as do the fallow fields. Villafranchian rounded pebbles form the bulk of the terroir. This allows rainwater to seep into the layer of stones. It then collects in the gullies of the underlying terrain to form a discontinuous water table. This provides the vines with a steady supply of water, helping to prevent summer drought. The range of grape varieties is very diverse, enabling us to offer numerous single-varietal wines.

Traditional farming methods, organic

Emmanuelle Delon and Luc Vignal have decided to formalise their commitment to organic farming by beginning the conversion of the entire estate. Beyond this initiative, Mas du Chêne remains committed to traditional farming methods:

  • soil cultivation
  • moving away from synthetic chemicals in favour of sulphur and copper
  • shredding of prunings
  • sexual confusion against grape berry moths …
