Description
Karim Vionnet’s Fleurie is a fruity, rich and smooth wine, characterised by crisp, precise aromas. One is immediately reminded of red berries and black cherries, followed by floral notes and a hint of spice. On the palate, it is imbued with a wonderful spring-like freshness, beautifully complementing the fruit. On the finish, subtle hints of liquorice broaden the sensory profile of a decidedly complete wine. Pair it with a stuffed cabbage, and you’ll suddenly remember that this wine is also available in magnum bottles.
In the vineyard, in the cellar
Karim Vionnet’s Fleurie vines come from a 1-hectare plot situated on the other side of La Madone. The vines are 45–50 years old, mainly growing on weathered granite (Chiroubles erosion). At an altitude of 300 metres, with a south/south-east aspect. Entirely natural vine cultivation (uncertified organic). No use of plant protection products, pesticides or other chemicals; maintaining organic life is the priority for enhancing the terroir. Vinification using indigenous yeasts, aged for 9 months in barrels, very low use of sulphites.
The Fleurie appellation
The appellation has a distinctive geography. It is backed by a chain of ridges: Fût d’Avenas, Col de Durbize, Col des Labourons, Pic Raymont. The Madone hill overlooks the appellation and offers a breathtaking panorama of the entire vineyard. It extends solely within the eponymous commune and owes its name to a Roman legionnaire.
