Château Fougas has been a family-owned estate since its establishment in the 18th century. A charming watercolour by a surveyor of the time depicts Château Fougas surrounded by its contiguous land, where vineyards are already visible. The current owners, Jean-Yves and Michèle Béchet, strive to produce a quality wine characterised by the minerality of its terroir, thanks to organic and biodynamic cultivation.
From a geological perspective, the soil at Château Fougas consists of water- and wind-deposited colluvial material. Blue iron-rich clays, mixed with sand and gravel, lie atop a limestone base of Fronsadais molasse. These particularly fine blue surface clays lend the wines freshness, suppleness and refined tannins; The limestone bedrock provides balance. The topography is also highly unusual, situated on a plateau that benefits from natural drainage thanks to two small streams located below at the eastern and western ends.
“For our wines, we seek an expression of terroir; we look for notes of violet rather than tar, and refinement rather than intensity… Far from passing fads but close to the land, we are committed to authenticity, which yields gentle, refined and elegant wines, rich in beautiful aromas of spices and fruit…”
