Fouassier Estate

Fouassier Sancerre

The Fouassier family has been established on the Sancerre hilltop for over ten generations. It is one of the oldest families of Sancerre winegrowers. Today, it is Benoit (Jean-Michel’s son) and Paul (Pierre’s son) who are at the helm. The estate owes its reputation to its exemplary work on individual plots and the practice of biodynamics across the entire vineyard.

An exemplary piecemeal approach

What sets the Fouassier estate apart is that it vinifies each plot individually. All of these plots have been spread across the three main terroirs of the Sancerre region since the 1980s:

  • Limestone soil: floral and citrus aromas can be detected, along with a certain freshness on the finish.
  • Clay-limestone soil: wines produced from this soil exhibit greater organoleptic complexity than those from limestone soil. They also have a more substantial structure on the palate. These wines require a little more time to open up and reveal their full potential.
  • Flinty soil: with its distinctive mineral character, this soil produces the most complex wines. These are the ones with the brightest future.

Biodynamics, or respect for the terroir

The Fouassier estate is currently certified as organic and biodynamic (Biodyvin label). No synthetic plant protection products, GMOs, pesticides or other chemical fertilisers are used. Herbal teas and decoctions made from medicinal plants (nettles, horsetail, willow, etc.) are used; the estate produces its own compost.
