Agarrus, The Postman’s Vineyard

Serge Scherrer’s Agarrus estate is a wonderful story even before it is a vineyard. In the region (the Cévennes, Duchy of Uzès), it is known as ‘the postman’s vineyard’. A postman in his earlier career, Serge Scherrer started from scratch to build his Agarrus estate. Driven solely by his conviction, he produces some of the region’s finest wines using organic and natural methods. His generosity, depth and humility are reflected in his wines. A must-try!

The story of Agarrus

Agarrus is the wonderful story of an Alsatian who has made his home in the Cévennes. A postman in the morning and a winegrower in the afternoon. Serge Scherrer’s career with La Poste seems very much like a twist of fate. Driven by life’s circumstances, for this former pupil of the agricultural and viticultural college in Rouffach (Haut-Rhin), holder of a BTS in agronomy, had a very different destiny in mind. That is no doubt why he always kept an eye on the vineyards around him, eventually unearthing a real gem.

A vineyard saved from being grubbed up

In 2007, Serge Scherrer bought just under a hectare of land that the owner had intended to grub up three days later. This marked the beginning of the Agarrus story. With nothing but his passion and limited resources, he produced his first vintages in a 50m² shed shared with a potter, guided solely by his inspiration and convictions. Over the years, he added a few plots of old vines to his estate. Today, it covers a total area of 7 hectares and a few rows.

A natural approach that celebrates the local terroir

The estate, which stretches along the edge of the garrigue, is entirely managed under certified organic farming practices. Respect for nature is the guiding principle: the soil is worked without weedkillers, fertilisers or synthetic chemicals. Winemaking is carried out without additives. The result is wines that beautifully express their terroir and showcase the fruit with finesse and precision.
