Description
The Septentrion cuvée from Mas des Mesures is a pure and distinguished expression of Mediterranean Syrah with hints of the Rhône. The aromatic profile of black fruits (blackberry, burlat, plum) gives way to smoky notes, complemented by tapenade, bay leaf, a hint of liquorice and a touch of pepper. The richness and voluptuousness on the palate are both held in check by a saving tension. Vincent Augé’s style is evident here, with precision and delicacy. A wine that will benefit from a few years of ageing but is already ready to accompany a fine cut of beef.
In the vineyard
The vines are situated at an altitude of between 300 and 400 metres on varied terroirs (schist alluvium, sandstone, clay-limestone). The 3-hectare vineyard comprises Grenache, Syrah, Chardonnay and old goblet-trained vines planted with Carignan, Aramons, etc. This region is somewhat of an enclave subject to a tempered Mediterranean climate due to its geographical location. This is because it is a valley nestled between the foothills (600–800m) and the Caroux (1,200m). This location allows for good phenolic ripeness without high alcohol levels. It also yields fresh profiles with good acidity, which is essential for producing sulphur-free wines.
In the cellar
A blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache, vatted by gravity and mostly destemmed. Vinification in stainless steel vats (indigenous yeasts – sulphur-free) and extraction solely by punching down. Aged for 10 months in four-year-old demi-muids without the addition of SO2, either during vinification or bottling.
