Flavia, natural wines from Mount Etna in Sicily

Flavia

The Flavia vineyard is situated between Contrada Birgi and Paolini, just a stone’s throw from the Stagnone Nature Reserve and the historic salt pans of Marsala. Giacomo and Flavia represent the fourth generation of winemakers in the Rollo family, dating back to 1860. They produce wines from their local terroir, dedicating themselves entirely to indigenous Sicilian grape varieties. A passion for their work, intuition and dedication now come together in organic farming and natural winemaking. Unfiltered wines with very low sulphite content.

Flavia, a naturally produced wine with a distinctly Italian character

This passion was born here in the Trapani region and has its roots in times long past. In 1860, to be precise, when great-grandfather Francesco Rallo moved to the Sicilian countryside. He began working on the first plots of land in the Baiata district. Since then, the passion, skill and love for doing things with heart have been passed down from father to son, giving rise to this Italian natural wine that defies all conventions.

Wines of Etna: the fruit of heroic viticulture

Etna wines are described as ‘extreme’ because they are produced beyond all limits. They are the result of heroic viticulture under impossible conditions:

  • The slope of the land exceeds 30%, which makes mechanisation impossible. As a result, work in the vineyard and the grape harvest are carried out by hand using traditional methods
  • Extreme elevations ranging from over 500 metres to 900 metres
  • Small vineyards, planted with young vines on volcanic terraces
  • Weather conditions are not always ideal, with significant daily temperature variations due to the volcano’s microclimate
  • Special vinification methods and the use of age-old grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Carricante

The wines of the FLAVIA vineyard

The wines of the Flavia estate are produced from the indigenous grape varieties Carricante and Nerello Mascalese. They offer those who taste them the purest expression of Etna’s volcanic wines. The distinctive characteristics of these wines stem mainly from the sandy-volcanic soils and the microclimate. The aromas are incomparable. Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety of absolute finesse. Carricante is ideal for producing a white wine that captures all the aromas of the region, from the sea to the slopes of Mount Etna.

The presence of the sea contributes not only to the formation of mineral-rich soils but also to the distinctive flavour and aroma of Sicilian wines.

The choice of organic viticulture was a natural one, for the sake of soil quality, biodiversity and human health. The main aim is to increase the levels of organic matter in the soil and eliminate the use of fertilisers, herbicides and plant protection products.
