Marc Kreydenweiss, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Alsace

The vineyards and terroirs of the Kreydenweiss estate

The estate is situated in Andlau, Alsace, halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar, in the Vosges foothills. Nestled at the foot of the mountains, the vineyard enjoys a continental climate and is characterised by a mosaic of terroirs. The diversity of the terroirs is an additional asset for the wines.

The estate comprises 13.5 hectares of vineyards spread over a 10-kilometre radius around the estate in the commune of Andlau, as well as neighbouring communes such as Eichhoffen and Mittelbergheim, and Barr.

Eighty per cent of the vineyard is planted on hillsides or gentle slopes, facing predominantly south or south-east. The soil composition is complex, featuring layers of pink sandstone, granite, grey/blue or black schist, sediments and limestone, which lend the wines finesse, minerality and freshness.

Biodynamics and natural winemaking

With the help of a dedicated team and two horses, the Kreydenweiss estate has been practising biodynamic viticulture across the entire estate for 30 years. Fermentation takes place naturally, with slow pressing followed by extended ageing on the lees (sometimes for up to three years) and minimal use of sulphites.

Moon to drink

Alongside the estate’s own production, Antoine Kreydenweiss has embarked on a collaborative venture with fellow winegrowers. All are passionate about their craft, with a keen sensitivity and respect for nature; they practise organic viticulture, producing grapes that truly reflect their terroir.

A gentle, unpretentious winemaking process, kept simple. No restrictions on how we work: we blend terroirs, grape varieties and even vintages. The only limit is the quality and the expression of the Alsatian terroirs in the bottle.
