Capelanel Estate

Capelanel Cahors Sébastien DAuliac

The Capelanel estate in Cahors is a small family-run estate perched on the limestone plateaus above the village of Luzech and the River Lot. Not only is the location magnificent, but the soils are also unique in that they are siderolitic. This means that the clay is mixed with iron fragments. These brown soils, which are relatively rare within the appellation, produce Malbecs that are taut and fresh, finely crafted, delicate and vibrant.

Capelanel: organic farming and a passion for grapes

Sébastien Dauliac is the fifth generation to run the Capelanel estate, which combines his mother’s and father’s land. Beyond his switch to organic farming, he possesses a unique understanding of the grape. This is why he has always prioritised finesse over extraction, producing Cahors wines that are more linear than bold. These Burgundian-style macerations are paying off. The wines are built on a demanding fruit profile and make the most of the unique tension of the siderolitic soils.

The Green Guide to the Best Wines of France

The wines show very little extraction but rather an infusion of flavours, without any heaviness. Sébastien Dauliac vinifies with great skill to preserve the radiant fruit of the Cahors plateau. And above all, that acidity so characteristic of the terroir. With a relaxed juice and a delicate structure, Petitou opens the range. Followed by Titouan, which displays the depth of a languid Malbec, extracted with finesse. La Rangée du Curé, more austere than the others, is still tight but nevertheless possesses the vigour to age well.
