Petitou 2016

"Capelanel's Cahors Petitou is an excellent introduction to the appellation's siderolitic terroir. This minimalist Malbec, aged in concrete vats, is pure fruit juice: crisp, fresh and delicate. The tasting experience is rounded off by a slight smoky note and a pronounced minerality that is very characteristic of this terroir. Perfect with a selection of charcuterie or a Rocamadour. Excellent value for money."

Description

Capelanel’s Cahors Petitou is an excellent introduction to the appellation’s siderolitic terroir. Excellent value for money.

The estate

The Capelanel estate in Cahors is a small family-run estate perched on the limestone plateaus above the village of Luzech and the River Lot. Not only is the location magnificent, but the soils are also unique in being siderolitic. This means that the clay is mixed with iron fragments. These brown soils, relatively rare in the appellation, produce Malbecs that are taut and fresh, finely crafted, delicate and vibrant.

Organic farming and an understanding of the grape

Sébastien Dauliac is the fifth generation to run the Capelanel estate, a union of his mother’s and father’s lands. Beyond his conversion to organic farming, he possesses a particular understanding of the grape. This is why he has always prioritised finesse over extraction, producing Cahors wines that are more linear than bold. These Burgundian-style macerations are now paying off with wines that build upon demanding fruit and play on the distinctive tension of the siderolitic soils.

What to eat with a Cahors Petitou de Capelanel?
