Description
The Chinon Château de Coulaine is a fine wine that showcases remarkable fruitiness. It possesses just the right amount of structure and depth. It has a deep garnet-ruby colour. The nose evokes both red fruits (raspberry) and black fruits (blackberry). The palate is fresh and supple, displaying clear fruitiness, silky tannins and perfect balance. A very fine achievement for this lovely Chinon, which has eschewed oak to showcase its terroir.
In the vineyard, in the cellar
This Chinon cuvée from Château de Coulaine is not a single-vineyard selection in the strict sense of the term. It is a blend of plots on the hillsides and plateaus surrounding the estate. Hand-harvested. Cold maceration in concrete vats. Native yeasts, no deacidification. Unfined wine, earth filtration. Matured in concrete vats, then in barrels for a few months.
The estate has been certified organic since 1997. However, the process began long before that, as the desire to work the soil mechanically and without using herbicides had already taken root since the estate’s re-establishment in 1989. Efforts are being made to reduce soil tillage between the rows. This includes preserving the natural ground cover or sowing mixtures of plants that provide nutrients for the vines. Additionally, sexual confusion techniques are being implemented to combat the proliferation of grape-damaging moths.
