Description
The Chablis 1er Cru Montmains from Domaine de l’Enclos comes from old vines planted in deep soil on a gentle slope, on the edge of the Forêt sub-region. It produces a robust, more complex wine with a wild and expressive character. Ripe orchard fruits (apple, pear), minerality and subtle hints of iodine and smoke. A Chablis with a sunny brilliance that retains a mouth-watering character and a juicy texture without the slightest heaviness. Pair it with a fine fish (turbot) with chanterelle mushrooms, or scallops.

Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, flagship vineyard
The name of the Chablis Premier Cru Montmains climat refers to the hill situated at an intermediate altitude between two higher ridges. Montmains encompasses, under its flagship banner, itself as well as the Butteaux and Forêts climats. Together, they cover approximately 118 hectares. This long, narrow Climat faces south-east/north-east and benefits from the sun in the early hours of the day. Exposed to the wind, Montmains is cooler than other Climats. Its hallmark? Harvests that are often later than elsewhere. Geologically, the Climat is characterised by the presence of Kimmeridgian marl, which is sometimes found in thick layers beneath the clay. On the surface, the clay, which is often shallow, sometimes takes on a brown or dark red colour.
What is a flagship Chablis climat?
The Chablis vineyard comprises 79 cadastral sites designated for wine-growing within the defined area of the Chablis Premier Cru appellation. The INAO (Institut National de l’Origine et de la Qualité) has grouped these into 40 Climats that may be indicated on the bottle labels. In reality, only around twenty of these are commonly used.
A distinctive feature of Chablis is that these 40 Climats include 17 principal Climats, also known as ‘flagship’ Climats. Wines produced in the Climats neighbouring these principal ones may either bear the name of the Climat from which they are geographically derived, or take the name of the flagship Climat to which they are linked.
