"Thomas Rivier’s 2019 Régnié was the first highly promising vintage from this new winemaker. After a few years in the cellar, this little gem of a Gamay has truly come into its own! Having taken over 4 hectares of family vineyards, Thomas is committed to producing organic and natural wines. His ‘Domaine’ cuvée is a juicy wine with a restrained concentration. The nose evokes wild strawberries, complemented by notes of sloe, raspberry and sweet spices. On the palate, it balances freshness with lovely structure, underpinned by fine tannins."

Description

Thomas Rivier’s 2019 Régnié is the first highly promising vintage from this new winemaker. On the palate, it balances freshness with lovely structure, built on fine tannins.

In the vineyard, in the cellar

Thomas Rivier’s vineyard is situated entirely within the geographical area of the Régnié Protected Designation of Origin. The sole grape variety is Gamay noir à jus blanc, which came from Burgundy to flourish in the terroirs of the Beaujolais. The vines benefit from one of the finest terroirs in the Régnié Cru. They cover an area of 3.5 hectares. The terrain consists mainly of gently sloping hillsides, facing east at the foot of the imposing church. The latter, with its two bell towers, has become the emblem of the Régnié Cru.

The soils consist mainly of granitic sand, which is rather sandy and light, rich in minerals. The majority of the vines, which are over 50 years old, yield low yields (around 40 hl/ha). They produce high-quality grapes in small-berried bunches. Thomas Rivier began converting his estate to organic farming in 2019. Previously, the estate was run by his mother Claire in a very sustainable manner.

Indigenous yeasts. Semi-carbonic fermentation. Aged in concrete vats and old barrels.
