Château La Dournie, Organic Wines in Saint-Chinian

La Dournie Saint-Chinian Noémie Vidil

Acquired in 1870 by the Etienne family, Château La Dournie has been a family-owned estate in Saint-Chinian, passed down from mother to daughter for over six generations. Its most recent representative, Véronique Etienne, has now handed over the reins to a new team led by Noémie Vidil.

The estate continues the work begun by the domaine under organic certification (achieved in 2017), preserving the spirit of La Dournie: wines that are neither too brash nor too ripe. Instead, they offer harmony and lightness, fruitiness and just the right concentration characteristic of schist soils.

A unique terroir

The terroir of Château La Dournie lies at the foot of the Cévennes hills, at an altitude of around 160 metres above sea level. This terroir consists of schist, acidic soils and a sandy-loam texture. Its distinctive feature is that it stores heat during the day and releases it at night. Here, the wind and the sun are the dominant forces. The vineyard is planted mainly with Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. The vines, which are on average 30 years old, have all been replanted. However, there are still a few old Grenache vines dating back 50 years.

Organic farming and minimal intervention winemaking at La Dournie

The men and women of La Dournie have always taken particular care to cultivate their vines using sustainable farming practices. This has enabled the estate to make a smooth transition to organic farming (certification completed in 2017). In the cellar, the winemaking process is carried out as naturally as possible, using a minimum of additives.

Saint-Chinian, a wine region nestled between schist and limestone

The history of the Saint-Chinian appellation is, above all, a story of the contrast between schist and limestone. Yet from this duality of terroir – and its striking contrasts – a singular ambition emerges. To discover this unique appellation, visit the Crus du Saint-Chinian website.
