Description
Julien Guillot’s 2019 Mâcon Cruzille (Clos des Vignes du Maynes) is a little gem made from a blend of old Gamay vines. The wine was aged for 12 months in old barrels. The fruit is masterfully rich, the texture smooth and silky, with a lovely mineral backbone and just the right touch of earthiness. A fine achievement for this wine of character, which will benefit from a little aeration to fully appreciate its depth and richness.
In the vineyard, in the cellar
- Estate: Clos des Vignes du Maynes
- Appellation: Mâcon-Cruzille
- Grape variety: several plots of old Gamay comprising many different varieties
- Terroir: A 6-hectare vineyard planted by the monks of Cluny Abbey around 910. The subsoil is of the BATHONIAN type, dating from the Middle Jurassic period; these are hard limestones found throughout Burgundy. The distinctive feature lies in the pearly-slab limestone, which yields magnificent limestone crystals: calcite and aragonite. The shallow soil, ranging from 5 cm to 50 cm in depth, is of a clay-limestone type. It consists of clayey silt formed by colluvial processes on top of weathered, very calcareous and silica-rich pure silt, which imparts a lovely minerality to the wines.
- Vines: Pruned to single Guyot then Cordon Royat / Soil cultivation / Manual debudding on the vine and at the base
- Farming: Organic farming since 1954 and biodynamic farming since 1998.
- Vinification: Semi-carbonic maceration for around a fortnight. Very little punching down
- Ageing: 12 months in barrels previously used for various wines
