Description
The nose reveals notes of black fruits such as blackcurrant, typical of this appellation. The mid-palate is full-bodied, very earthy with robust tannins. It is a wine with plenty of substance, well-rounded and approachable.
The terroir
Located in the village of Comblanchien, the plot is shaped like a hat, which is said to have given it its name. The vineyard covers an area of 1.6 hectares of soil combining clay and limestone, ideal for bringing out the richness of Pinot Noir.

- The pleasure of Pinot Noir: the grape variety is magical provided it is treated with respect. For its vines, the estate has selected ‘very fine Pinot’ grapes, with small berries, and above all, it takes care to limit yields: 35 hectolitres per hectare for the Clos du Chapeau. This is an essential requirement for bringing out the aromatic palette of Pinot Noir.
- Gentle ageing: with 10 to 15% new barrels, Clos du Chapeau never appears overly oaky; the new oak acts merely as a spice that enhances the wine. Bottling takes place after 14 months of ageing.
- The Côte de Nuits Villages appellation covers vineyards in five villages: Fixin, Bronchon, Prémeaux, Comblanchien and Corgoloin. The vineyard covers 170 hectares.
Food and Wine Pairings
The richness and sensuality of this red wine pair easily with parsley-crusted ham or Lyon sausage. It is capable of going further and pairing with a chicken with porcini mushrooms, a guinea fowl with shallots or grilled veal kidney.
