Description
It is on a tiny, steeply sloping plot in the Côte de Beaune that Alain and Isabelle Hasard produce this Sous la Roche de Monthelie white cuvée. A fine achievement, this white wine evokes ripe fruit (mirabelle plum, apricot and almond). On the palate, one finds all the perfect balance characteristic of Champs de l’Abbaye wines. Sensual and irresistible!
In the vineyard, in the cellar
The terroir of Champs de l’Abbaye’s Monthelie white consists of white Oxfordian marl, facing due east. A very steep vineyard, beneath the rocky outcrop (hence its name). This commanding position offers a magnificent view over the vineyards of Monthelie and Meursault, and the Bresse plain. Vines planted in 2012 using mass selections of Chardonnay and high-quality clones. Planting density: 11,000 vines/ha. The extremely well-drained nature of the soil, combined with the repeated adverse weather conditions this area has experienced over several years, made establishing the vineyard a long and complicated process. A very small first harvest in 2017, six years after planting. Yield: 40 hl/ha. Pneumatic pressing of whole bunches – Natural yeasts – Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrels (30% new) – Light fining (bentonite) and filtration through a pure cellulose disc.
