Description
Col d'Orcia, an iconic producer of Brunello di Montalcino, has chosen to continue using large, old wooden barrels. The estate aims to respect the very essence of Montalcino Sangiovese, thereby preserving its potential for ageing and improvement over time.
Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino is aged for three years in large oak casks and kept for a further year before being released onto the market.
In the vineyard
The Col d’Orcia vineyards are located in Montalcino, on the south-facing hillside overlooking the River Orcia. They are entirely organically farmed. The average altitude above sea level is 250 metres. The vineyard is planted entirely with Sangiovese, the region’s iconic grape variety, also known as Brunello here in Tuscany.
In the cellar
Fermentation on the skins for approximately 18–20 days at a controlled temperature below 28°C in shallow, wide steel vats (150 hl) to preserve the fresh, lively fruit character for as long as possible. Aged for 36 months in Slovenian and Allier oak casks, ranging from 25, 50 to 75 hl, before being bottled and aged for a further year.
