The André et Mirelle Tissot estate, run by Stéphane and Bénédicte Tissot, is one of the leading names in Arbois and a must-visit in the Jura. Having switched entirely to organic farming in 1999 and biodynamic farming in 2004, the estate strives to reveal the true essence of the Jura terroirs, whilst showing the utmost respect for the natural balance of the grapes.
The Stéphane Tissot estate was founded in 1962 in Montigny-les-Arsures by André and Mireille Tissot. They inherited 38 ares of vines planted by their grandfather Maurice in 1956. Joining his father at the estate in 1989 at the age of 19, Stéphane gradually took over the running of the estate, bringing his own vision of wine to it (see below: The Winemaker Talks). He converted the estate to organic farming in 1999 and then to biodynamic farming in 2004. Over time, the estate expanded through the purchase of Curon, La Mailloche, Les Bruyères and Château-Chalon, eventually reaching nearly 50 hectares.
A wine made with love and passion is bound to stir the emotions… A wine reflects the personalities and character of those who made it, for every gesture, every step, and every decision counts. Nature works in such a way that, when it comes to natural wine, no two bottles are exactly alike anywhere in the world – unlike industrial wines, which all taste the same.
The industrialisation of wine spells the end of all those distinct identities, nuances and characteristics that make a bottle so special.
The work on our estate is, in a way, a summary of all that.
Exceptional terroirs, such as Les Bruyères, La Mailloche, En Barberon and Curon. An ever-increasing quest to express these terroirs: our 35 hectares of vines are now cultivated using biodynamic methods (Demeter-certified) to allow the soil to thrive, to produce grapes free from chemicals, to enable fermentation with natural yeasts, and to reduce the use of sulphur in the cellar.
This quest for aromatic diversity has led us to produce 28 different cuvées, often terroir by terroir, with many innovations that take into account the extraordinary potential of the Jura vineyards.
Our working method thus demands a great deal of effort from us and our entire team. There are 15 of us working year-round, assisted by a few students in the summer, and in September… 50 grape pickers.
Finally, there is no shortage of projects, from creating new vintages to replanting vineyards such as Clos de la Tour de Curon, not to mention our desire to constantly strive for even greater quality – something that is so dear to our hearts.
