Understanding biodynamic wines

Drawing on the writings of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, biodynamics goes further than organic wine-growing. It involves nurturing the soil and the vines within their natural environment using preparations derived exclusively from plant, animal and mineral sources, all whilst following a calendar based on the rhythms of the sun and moon. The aim is to restore balance to the ecosystem and create harmonious living conditions between the soil, plants and the environment in order to produce high-quality wine. Whilst no European agreement currently exists, two reputable and recognised certification bodies, Demeter and Biodyvin, now regulate biodynamic practices. It is clear that many of France’s most prestigious estates now practise biodynamics.
