What is natural wine?

It is difficult to provide a precise and comprehensive definition of the concept of natural wines, as no such definition exists. However, certain groups such as Vin Méthode Nature, AVN (Association des Vins Naturels) or SAINS (Sans Aucun Intrant Ni Sulfites ajoutés) propose a set of guidelines that support an approach which is more akin to a philosophy than to a mere cultivation practice or winemaking method. It is therefore essential for any lover of natural wines to engage closely with each winemaker to understand their approach and their work.

We can agree on a few common principles that help us understand the approach of these winegrowers, for whom organic and biodynamic wines are not enough. Broadly speaking, we can say that these winegrowers aim to be in total harmony with nature and the environment by producing wines with a minimum of inputs and intervention. In a nutshell: organic cultivation, of course, natural grass cover and biodiversity, the exclusive use of indigenous yeasts, no filtration, and an almost total reduction in added sulphites.
